HOW #MyNYPD BACKFIRED ON NEW YORK'S FINEST

Social media is a much like a sharp kitchen knife, very useful, powerful and a masterful tool when used by a professional. One slip in concentration however, can result in some pretty nasty wounds being inflicted. The NYPD still has an open wound stemming from a failed hashtag attempt in April this year.

THE NYPD

The NYPD (New York Police Department) is a United States Government entity charged with the responsibility of protecting and serving the people of New York. It is the largest municipal (local government) police force in the United States as listed by the American Bureau of Justice statistics (http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/lpd07.pdf) with over 35,000 sworn personnel and over 51,000 full time employees which equates to 63 staff to serve every 10,000 residents according to 2007 data.

The organisation is publicly overseen by the Police Commissioner, William J Bratton, whose duty it is to oversee the day-to-day running of the NYPD whilst appointing deputy’s and subordinate officers. It is worth noting that Commissioner Bratton has his own twitter handle @CommissBratton. Think back to this when reading the last paragraph.

CALCULATING A PROJECTS RETURN ON INVESTMENT (ROI)

Measuring the Return on Investment (ROI) on any proposed business venture, or an existing business where additional investment is proposed to be made, is an important aspect to consider when deciding on whether to invest the funds into the business. It is a preliminary measure to indicate whether a project will generate a positive return on the funds invested based on existing conditions and assumptions about the future. To better illustrate this concept, I will map out a ROI analysis on a fictitious company.  Most companies also have a pre-determined hurdle rate against which they measure any new project to determine whether or not to proceed with the proposed investment.  MidRange uses a hurdle rate of 25%.

SMALL BUSINESS BIG POTENTIAL

Social technology in business can be a bit of a minefield. Get it right and you stand to reap the benefits of engaging your customers, get it wrong and you will feel its wrath. For a good example of what not to do have a look at the Black Milk social media fail here and here

Rather than do a case study on an organisation from an external viewpoint, I thought I could share some experiences from a small business that I am lucky enough to be a part of. This is a business that is just starting to hit its stride with social media and I will try and give a peek inside what we have done right, and what we can improve upon.

CASH RULES EVERYTHING AROUND ME

For this post I’m going to try something different. I’m going to attempt to change my writing style from highly explanative to short sharp and to the point, based on some feedback I have been given. Here we go.

This weeks topic is social media technology and how it is put to use on an organisational level and why. McKinsey’s report entitled, The social economy: Unlocking value and productivity through social technologies explores the concept of value creation in an organisation through social technologies. It identifies 10 ‘Levers’ that an organisation can use to generate value. These 10 levers are compartmentalised into 6 organisational functions including marketing and sales and customer service which I will further explore through the case study of Rapha.

INTO THE ENTERPRISE 2.0 WILDERNESS

In this blog post I will hope to clear some of the fog that lingers around the concept of enterprise 2.0 for most people, identify some examples of enabling technology and how this has been utilised in the wild.

Enterprise 2.0 is the utilisation of a set of technologies with strategy and intent in a way that makes today’s adopting business much more efficient and productive. It is the commercial crossover of web 2.0, but what is that? whats is web 1.0? They are hip new internet browsers. They are buzzwords and you should ignore them completely!

I will start from the beginning

#UrbanCross

Today started with a ride to map out a possible urban cross course with @menziescycles @crankstarmac. The ride started at gentleman's time of 7:00 outside Crankstar, but we ducked in for a quick coffee and left closer to 7:30. The first 10km's was just your typical urban ride through bike paths and suburban streets, but once we hit the gravel that all changed.

We got off the bikes and walked
